When American architect and engineer William LeBaron Jenney designed Chicago’s Home Insurance Building in 1884, it rose to the then-astounding height of 180 feet, spawning fierce debate about its safety and forcing the city to change its building codes.
Generally considered to be the first skyscraper, the building employed skeleton construction, a technique still used to build today’s supertall towers—though it’s unlikely that Jenney could have imagined buildings such as Saudi Arabia’s Jeddah Tower, which will ascend 3,281 feet into the desert sky.

Dubai is no stranger to supertall, modern skyscrapers—the small kingdom already boasts the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa, but it will soon be dwarfed by the Jeddah Tower, a project that was temporarily delayed by concrete-related design issues. Now back on track, the tower will be completed in 2019 and will feature a Four Seasons hotel and an observatory.
