Celebrating the Father of the American Art Furniture Movement: Wendell Castle

by Redshift Video
Respect - Jul 12 2018 - 1 min read

American sculptor, artist, educator, and industrial designer Wendell Castle is often referred to as the “father of the art-furniture movement.” His captivating use of color, material, and whimsy in creating unique furniture pieces earned him many awards, international accolades, and installations in museums around the world. From his studio in Scottsville, New York, to his enduring relationship with the Rochester Institute of Technology, Castle made a lifelong commitment to educating and sharing his artistic vision. Sadly, Castle passed away in January 2018. Here, RIT’s Josh Owen and Wendell Castle Studio craftsperson Bridget Sheehan discuss Castle’s work, his approach to design and education, and his enduring legacy in American design.
